At our Colchester diagnostic centre, we provide gold standard autism assessments for adults, using recognised diagnostic tools in line with NICE guidance.
Our expert team takes a respectful and thorough approach, ensuring each assessment reflects your personal experiences, strengths, and challenges.
What to Expect:
Pre-assessment Screening, Registration and clinical Consultation – We consider developmental, medical, educational, and family history to build a full picture of circumstances.
Comprehensive Developmental History Interview (using the ADI-R): a detailed conversation with parents or carers, and where appropriate, the child or teenager. This helps us explore the key characteristics of autism—such as differences in communication, social interaction, or behavioural patterns —and how these are experienced in everyday life at home, in education, and in social settings.
A structured observation: this will be with our clinicians in our diagnostic suite in Colchester, using the standardised autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS-2), looking at your child’s social and communication presentation, and any repetitive or restricted behaviours.
Ruling Out Other Explanations: We carefully assess whether other factors—such as anxiety, depression, or other conditions—may overlap with autistic traits, ensuring the diagnosis is accurate and meaningful.
All of our adult autism assessments meet NICE guidelines. We work to the highest standards set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, using recognised diagnostic tools within a thorough, multidisciplinary process.
We bring together information from work, education, home life, and other settings, considering the wider context to provide a clear understanding of your strengths and the challenges you may face with autism.

These are some of the questions adults often ask when considering an autism assessment.
Many adults pursue a diagnosis to gain clarity about their experiences, challenges, and strengths. A diagnosis can bring understanding, validation, and access to tailored support in work, relationships, education, and daily life.
Our assessments include an in-depth interview, a review of your developmental, medical, and educational history, and the use of recognised diagnostic tools in line with NICE guidance. We focus on how autistic traits may present across different areas of your life.
Adult autism assessments are detailed and typically take several hours, sometimes over more than one appointment. This allows us to gather a full picture of your experiences and ensure the outcome is accurate.
Where possible, it can be helpful to involve a family member or someone who knew you in childhood, as this provides useful background. However, if this is not possible, the assessment can still go ahead with other information.
You will receive a detailed written report that outlines the findings and includes recommendations for support. We also provide signposting to services, networks, and resources to help you take your next steps with confidence.
If the assessment shows that autism is not the right explanation, we will provide clear feedback and guidance on other possible considerations. This ensures you still gain useful insights and direction for future support.
